In 2024, Accreditation Canada’s Echocardiography Quality Improvement (EQI) team began the exciting process of refreshing the Standards that are used to assess Echocardiography facilities in Ontario. Currently, facilities are being assessed based on the CorHealth Standards for Provision of Echocardiography in Ontario, published in April of 2021.

The new Standards, or EQI Requirements, as they will be known going forward, have been aligned with the changes in practice guidelines and in consideration of feedback received from an expert panel of cardiologists. The EQI Requirements have also been reformatted to include specific and detailed technical information for each modality to help sites better interpret each EQI Requirement. Each EQI Requirement also has an accompanying explanation for further clarification.  

Additions to the EQI Requirements also include the use of contrast, pediatric requirements, people-centred care, cybersecurity, and pre-examination steps. Requirements for the Medical Director/staff qualifications have also been updated.  

The EQI Requirements can be accessed by all registered clients through the QView™ client portal along with a presentation outlining what has changed. Site assessments against the new requirements will commence in April 2026.
